Questions
What it costs, how long it takes, what the warranty covers, and whether it can go over what you already have.
The product
What exactly is Duradek?
A single-ply PVC sheet membrane, 60 mil thick, that serves as both the waterproofing layer and the finished walking surface of a deck. It has been manufactured since 1974. Because one product does both jobs, there is no interface between a waterproofing layer and a wearing surface for water to find.
Is Duradek vinyl slippery when wet?
No. The surface is embossed with a texture that provides slip resistance in wet conditions, which is why it is used on pool decks, rooftop patios and anywhere else that stays wet through a West Coast winter.
What colours and patterns are available?
Over twenty, ranging from natural wood looks to modern solid colours, including the heat-reflective Cool-Dek range for decks in full sun. We bring physical samples to the consultation — colour on a screen is not colour.
How long does it last?
Fifteen to twenty years of service life is typical. It is UV stable and formulated to expand and contract with temperature, so it does not crack, chip or peel the way a surface coating eventually does.
The work
How long does an installation take?
Most residential decks are finished in two to five days, depending on size and how much detailing the job involves. Your quote states the timeline for your job.
Can Duradek go over my existing deck?
Often, yes. If the existing structure is sound and the substrate is suitable, the membrane can be installed directly over it. If it is not, we will tell you at the consultation rather than after we have started — a membrane over rotten sheathing is a hidden problem, not a fixed one.
Do you repair existing decks, or only install new ones?
Both. A lot of what we do is a deck that already exists and has started letting water through. We assess the structure at the consultation: if the framing and sheathing are sound, the membrane goes straight over what is there. If something underneath has already rotted, replacing it becomes part of the job and part of the quote — putting a waterproof surface over failed sheathing hides the problem rather than fixing it.
Can you work through the winter?
Yes, we install year round. Weather can affect the timeline in some seasons, so a winter job is scheduled around the forecast rather than through it.
Do you handle permits and inspections?
Yes. Where a permit is required we obtain it and schedule the inspections, so the finished deck complies with the local building code for your municipality.
Cost, warranty and aftercare
What warranty do I get?
Two of them. Duradek carries a manufacturer warranty covering the membrane — its waterproofing performance and, separately, its appearance. RhinoDecks warrants the installation workmanship, so how it was fitted is covered too. How long each runs depends on the product specified and the assembly it goes onto, so speak to a specialist and we will confirm the exact terms for your deck in writing. The coverage is transferable if you sell the house.
What does a deck cost?
It depends on the area, the condition of what is already there, and how much detailing the job needs — a simple rectangular sundeck and a multi-level deck of the same square footage are not the same job. We quote after seeing the deck, and the estimate is free. We do not publish a price per square foot, because a number that ignores the detailing is a number you cannot rely on.
Do you offer financing?
Yes, there are flexible financing options available. Ask about them during your consultation and we will go through what applies to your project.
How do I maintain it?
Sweep it, and wash it with soap and water when it needs it. There is no staining, sealing or annual re-coating. That is the entire maintenance schedule.
Working with us
Which areas do you serve?
Metro Vancouver and the surrounding Fraser Valley communities — Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, Coquitlam, North and West Vancouver, New Westminster, Port Moody, Maple Ridge, Langley and Delta. If you are just outside that, call and ask.
What happens at the free consultation?
We come to the property, measure, check the condition of the existing structure and substrate, talk through what you want the space to do, and show you samples. You get an itemised quote with a timeline afterwards. There is no charge and no obligation.
Still have a question?
Call and ask. If the answer is that vinyl is wrong for your deck, that is the answer you will get.
